Lasik eye surgery is an operation that can correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. However, Lasik eye surgery is not for those with certain conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. Those who also don't like wearing contact lenses or reading/correction glasses can also opt for this operation so that they won't need to depend on contacts or glasses anymore.
Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure
What's frightening about the Lasik eye surgery is that you will be awake the whole time and the entire procedure will take about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the severity of the condition of your eyes, and also if you are having both of your eyes repaired in the same session.
Before the operation begins, your doctor will give you an oral sedative, usually a mild one. In the beginning of the surgery, your surgeon will have you lie down on a reclining chair. Then, he/she will apply anesthesia into your eye, in the form of liquid drops, so that you will not feel any pain or discomfort during the entire operation.
Next, a holder will be placed in between your eyelids to prevent your eye from closing and blinking, as blinking can disrupt the process and it may damage your eye even further. Next, you have to make sure that your eye is positioned properly under the laser.
The surgeon will then mark your cornea with an ink marker before creating a flap. The flap will then be made with either a microkeratome or other mini surgical tools. Once the flap is created, it will then be attached to your cornea along with a suction ring which will help in keeping your eye still.
You will then be asked to look at a pinpoint light for a while. This is the laser that sculpts and fixes the cornea of patients. The duration of the surgery actually depends on the level of correction.
Once the operation is done, you will be advised by your doctor to rest for a few days. He/she will also give you the proper medications which you need to take based on your physician's instructions.
